European Universities in a Merger Frenzy

06 December, 2015

It’s not just big business; merger mania has hit universities across Europe. Since 2000, the number of university mergers increased substantially and almost 100 mergers have taken place, according to a report by the European University Association.

The report points to an array of motivating factors. The growing importance of research and innovation may have pressured many universities to consider coming together. Smaller universities have also banded together or joined larger universities in a bid to increase their competitiveness and climb up world university rankings.
